helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga
is probably the most controversial film of 2019. Even though it has been a year, people still bring up the topic of how problematic the film is. This time it was the female lead of the said film Kiara Advani
who defended the film and offered a different perspective in her recent interview with Film Companion's Anupama Chopra. The film stars Shahid Kapoor
and Kiara Advani in the leading roles as Kabir and Preeti respectively.
Advani revealed about the challenges of the film and how both the actors acknowledged it. She said, "Both Shahid and myself were well aware of the film (we were getting into), and everything that we knew would come with it." She continued, "Kabir Singh was probably the hardest of them all, because anyone who knows me knows my thinking," She said the film "was so real, and so flawed."
When asked about the backlash faced by the film with respective to the fans, she said, "So much was made out of it, and so much backlash happened, it was so exhausting." She added, "The director had his perspective, we had ours, and the audience theirs and that was divided, but I feel you can’t disrespect the intelligence of the audience."
She also went ahead and admitted that the criticism was rather harsh. "On some level, there were things that were raised in the debate (around the film) that were actually healthy... Somewhere we get really hard on certain films, and I don’t know if it was that fair to be that hard on this film." Said Kiara.
She also brought in her own point of view and said, "Sometimes I wonder had you seen Preeti’s life when she goes missing in the second half, maybe there would have been some sort of justification... Maybe had the audience seen what she went through when the separation happened would they have been so hard?..."
The film received a 7.1/10 on IMDb but invited strong scrutiny from fans and launched a whole debate on social media platforms.
