Seetharama Sastry made his debut with the 1984 film Janani Janmabhoomi. He got credited as Chembolu Seetharama Sastry in that movie. After gaining fame with the 1986 film Sirivennela, he is being called as Sirivennala Seetharama Sastry. The songs of this film so popular and also brought Sastry his first Nandi Award. He then penned lyrics for classics in films like Swarna Kamalam, Swayam Krushi, Samsaram Oka Chadarangam, Shruti Layalu, and Rudra Veena. He won Nandi Awards for Shruti Layalu and Swarna Kamalam in the subsequent years.
Over the 90s, Sastry became one of the top lyricists of the industry. He won five Nandi Awards from 1990-2000. He won the awards for the films Gaayam (1993), Shuba Lagnam (1994), Sreekaram (1996), Sindhooram (1997), and Prema Katha (1999).
He got honored with Padma Shri last year, which is the fourth highest civilian award in India. Recently, he penned lyrics for the highly popular song Samajavaragamana from the film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo.
