Actor Mahesh Babu has paid off his dues to the GST commissionerate amounting to Rs. 73.5 lakhs, putting the whole controversy to an end.
The actor was to pay service tax dues of Rs. 18.5 lakhs in 2010 for various endorsements at the time. He had approached the central excise and service tax tribunal for exemption from paying these dues but his appeal was overturned by the tribunal. Following the Hyderabad High Court's overturning of his appeal as well, the GST commissionerate seized two of Mahesh's bank accounts as per section 87 of the Finance Act, 1994 to recover the dues, which by now had worked up to Rs. 73.5 lakhs inclusive of interest and penalty.
A sum of 42.96 lakhs was recovered from one bank account while the actor, through his auditor, produced a DD to pay the balance 31,47,994.
