Amazon Prime Video is on a spree of buying films during this lockdown. It bought the rights of seven different films last month. Already, two of them, Ponmagal Vandhaal and Gulabo Sitabo have already had their digital premieres on the platform. The next one will be Tamil-Telugu bilingual Penguin, which will land on Prime Video on the 19th of this month. Now, we hear that Amazon will release two films in July. First, it will be Malayalam movie Sufiyum Sujathayum which will premiere on July 2nd. After that, Vidya Balan's Shakuntala Devi will arrive on the 31st of July.
Directed by Naranipuzha Shanavas, Sufiyum Sujathayum features Jayasurya and Aditi Rao Hydari in the lead roles. It got produced by Vijay Babu. The producer opted for a direct digital release as we are still unsure about the reopening of the theaters. M. Jayachandran has composed the music of it.
On the flip side, Vidya Balan's Shakuntala Devi is the second Bollywood biggie whose rights got bagged by Prime Video. This film is being directed by Anu Menon. This is a biographical drama of the genius mathematician Shakuntala Devi. Vidya Balan played the titular role in it. It was initially scheduled for the release on May 8. But it didn't happen due to the pandemic. Thus, the makers have opted for a digital release. Speaking in a recent interview, Vidya said that she is a bit sad that the film is not releasing in theaters but she also added that this is the best thing to do during these tough times.
