The web series Godman was to air on ZEE5 on June 12th, 2020. The show revolves around a low-life criminal who then transforms into a Godman. The teaser for Godman came a few days ago. Several religious organisations have criticised the teaser for some of its content. The OTT platform ZEE5 subsequently issued a statement suspending the show on the grounds of not wanting to offend any community, religious or personal beliefs or sentiment. The makers of the web series have issued a statement stating that the controversy was engineered. They believe that the controversy was engineered by unconstitutional forces.
The statement reads, 'The Tamil Nadu Brahmin community has come together like an army to file criminal cases in almost every police station all over the state demanding the show to be canceled. This included several complaints in Chennai too. All this complaint raised by Brahmin faction were just based on a 1-minute teaser for a show that is 380 minutes long.'
The makers have also said that they are being harassed by the Brahmin community over the last week. "They are spreading vicious rumours that the producer is a Christian stooge and his agenda is to create a communal riot through this show. They, through the likes of Subramaniya Swami, who hold influence with the Central Government, have threatened the bosses of Zee5 to stop the release of the show. Zee5 did cave in that led the aggressors to make announcements of victory by threats via social media. This is throttling of the freedom of expression that the state promises," said the makers.
The president of the World Brahmin’s Association, Subramaniya Iyer has registered a complaint. The complaint is against Elango Raghupathy and Babu Yogeshwaran, the director and the producer of the web series. The makers say the groups are creating uproar after watching a minute-long trailer with no context. And that their actions are a denial of the filmmakers' freedom of speech and expression which is unconstitutional.
The web series Godman stars Daniel Balaji, Jayaprakash and Soniya Agarwal. It reportedly explores the transformation of a gangster into a Godman. The guru who aids in the transformation doesn't believe that priesthood is bound by caste or to a community.
