In antismuggling operation Customs officials at Chennai International airport sezied 2.5 kg gold of 24 karat worth of Rs 79 lakh from 17 flyers. They are bringing gold from Colombo. All the 17 passengers are from Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. Sources said they may have been hired by the same kingpin. Customs officials said the smugglers came in two batches. One batch of 15 men arrived by Sri Lankan Airline flight UL 121 and the other batch of two came on Indigi flight 6E 1202. All of them were frequent travellers and were carrying only hand baggage.
They also added that while Azarudeen Kadar Mohideen was carrying three bundles, Mubeen Ahmed and Naseer Ahamad were found with two bundles each. The rest were carring one bundle each. Total 2.5 kg gold was seized under the provisions of Customs Act 1962.
