Kanda Sashti festival begins in Tiruchendur

Kanda Sashti festival started on thursady at Subramania Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur with ‘yagasala puja’, which was witnessed by thousands of devotees.This temple is considered as the second house of Lord Murugan, who vanquished demon Soorapadman. Devotees from various parts of India and also from other countries such as Sri Lanka and Malaysia come here during the festival.
 
The temple was opened at 1 a.m., ‘Vishwaroopa deeparadhanai’ was performed at 1.30 a.m., followed by ‘Udhaya Marthanda abhishekam’ at 2 a.m.After Lord Jayanthinathar (Lord Murugan) arrived at the ‘yagasalai’ around 6 a.m., along with Goddesses Valli and Deivanai. The yagasalai puja was performed to mark the commencement of the festival. ‘Mahadeeparathanai’ was offered at the yagasalai at 12 noon.
 
After taking a holy dip in the sea, thousands of devotees began their ‘Sashti fasting’.The highlight of the annual feat, ‘Soorasamharam,’ would be enacted on the beach at 4.30 p.m. on November 13. The sanctum sanctorum would be opened at 3 a.m. until November 12. On the night of November 14, ‘Thirukalyanam’ would take place.A 12-pillar mandapam, located behind Thoondugai Vinayagar Temple, in Sannathi Street collapsed early in the morning on Thursday. However, no casualties were reported.The structure, which had developed cracks, is said to have collapsed due to the intermittent rain over the last few days. Devotees demanded the structure to be pulled down completely.
