First-Day Box Office Receipts For Thunivu & Varisu: Ajith Sweeps Tamil Nadu, Vijay Wins India

"Team Thunivu" can brag about dominating in Tamil Nadu, whereas "team Varisu" actually has a higher all-India rating despite not having Telugu dub releases. The initial sales figures for the Pongal releases are in, and everyone is a winner in some way. The biggest winner, though, is the Tamil Nadu box office. It had its highest-grossing single day ever and surpassed the 40 crore rupee threshold. Thunivu and Varisu's combined box office receipts are anticipated to have totaled almost 41 crore rupees. The number could have been even higher, but some centres cancelled early morning shows.

The first day of box office sales for the Vijay-starring film Varisu brought in about Rs. 30 crores in India; roughly Rs. 20 crores of those receipts came from Tamil Nadu. The megastar's first-day earnings in Tamil Nadu rank sixth among all states. Since the release of Mersal in 2017, Vijay has consistently surpassed the Rs. 20 crore mark on the first day. No other actor has accomplished this feat even once until yesterday.

Varisu actually had higher occupancy levels than Thunivu yesterday, as was noted in our preview from earlier in the week. But it was limited by the capacity to go any higher at the most prime centres. The picture had exceptionally strong advance throughout the holiday weekend as a result of the first day's overabundance of demand continuing into the following days.

The fact that the picture is receiving favourable reviews from viewers. It can easily make up for its first-day income loss over the holiday season and beyond is what matters. The movie did well outside of Tamil Nadu as well. It earned over 4 crores in Kerala and Karnataka. On January 14, the Telugu version of the movie will be released. Given the positive buzz surrounding it, many people are anticipating a large audience.
