Karthi is the son of veteran actor Shivakumar. His elder brother Suriya is also a star hero in both Tamil and Telugu industries. He made his entry into the film industry as an assistant director. He assisted Mani Ratnam for the film Aayutha Ezhuthu (Yuva in Telugu). He also played a small role in it. Karthi made his debut as a lead actor with the 2007 film Paruthiveeran. He won Filmfare Award for Best Actor for this movie. It is rather a brave and bold debut for any star kid. Thus, Karthi proved his versatility right with his first film. Later, he went on to do successful films like Aayirathil Oruvan (Yuganiki Okkadu), Paiyaa (Awara), Naan Mahaan Alla (Naa Peru Shiva) and Siruthai.
Karthi got wide critical acclaim for his 2014 film Madras. Directed by Pa. Ranjith, this film deals with the topic of caste politics. In 2016, Karthi acted alongside Nagarjuna in Oopiri. His 2017 film Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru remained as a box office hit. In 2019, Karthi scored yet another blockbuster with Kaithi.
