The most anticipated Mani Ratnam film, Ponniyin Selvan, is scheduled for release on September 30, 2022. The teaser images and video radiate nothing less than grandeur. The clothes, enormous settings, and minute attention to detail are the film's greatest assets. They perfectly capture the period drama from the Chola Era.
We decided to learn more about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Trisha Krishnan's handcrafted jewellery and the process of making it as everything appeared to be regal and beautiful.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who plays Nandini, the Queen of Pazhuvoor, wears handcrafted jewellery in the movie. Traditional jewellery with traditional themes like the Goddess Lakshmi was made, including nose pins, vankis, arm bands, vaddanams, hair pieces, and neck pieces, to enhance the character's attractiveness. They are adorned in Thussis, medium- and long-length necklaces, jhumkas, rings, and bracelet sets adorned with uncut diamonds, emeralds, rubies, yellow sapphires, and pearl clusters.
Three artists worked on the jewellery that Kishandas & Co. of Hyderabad developed. The complex hairstyles, buns, and hairdos that were specified for each of the various character's haircuts served as inspiration for the creation of waist belts and accessories that complimented the costumes, silhouettes, and hair accessories. Each appearance has been designed to look well on a large screen.
It took the creators around six months to gather ideas and research historical figures and character traits. 18 craftspeople worked on it in all. They spent a month making a handmade neckpiece. The artisans worked together during the many phases of manufacturing jewellery, including nakashi work, stone fitting, and polishing, based on their areas of specialization.
The study team for Mani Ratnam, which included historians, looked into the themes and design of the Chola dynasty. They provided jewellery designers with thorough character briefs. In Ponniyin Selvan, Trisha and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's appearances were created using jewellery from the time period, including valuable uncut jewels like emeralds, rubies, and yellow sapphires.
As we know, Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan Vision project is a fulfilment of a lifelong goal. The talented director has done all necessary to maintain the story's royal feel. His task was to make character-defining jewellery using real materials.
All of the characteristic outfits were created by stylist Eka Lakhani in collaboration with Kishandas and envisioned by the renowned director Mani Ratnam.
