Grammys 2020: Billie Eilish wins top awards

The 62nd annual Grammy Awards witnessed a new sensation in Billie Eilish. The mood on Sunday night was somber due to the death earlier that day of the basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who spent much time of his N.B.A. career playing at the Staples Center, the same arena where the Grammys show get held.

Eilish, an 18-year-old artist with a moody and idiosyncratic aesthetic, won five awards: album, record and song of the year, and best new artist.

“Bad Guy,” a No. 1 hit, took record and song of the year while “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” won album of the year as well as a best pop vocal album. She is the youngest artist to win the album of the year.

Finneas O’Connell, her brother, who accepted the award for song of the year with her, mentioned that they record together in a bedroom in their home. “This is to all the kids that are making music in their bedroom today. You’re going to get one of these,” he said as he held the award.

Finneas also won producer of the year and an engineering award.
