Tollywood - January box office collection report:
2019 started off on a bright note for Tollywood with four big films clashing at the box office during Sankranti. But, the box office results changed everyone’s mindset as only one film turned out to be successful.
The year opened with NTR Kathanayakudu, one of the most anticipated films in 2019. Though the film received good reviews, However, the film couldn’t lure in the audience to the theatres. NTR Kathanayakudu was sold for Rs 70 crore, which is a staggering amount for a Balakrishna film and ended up as third biggest of Tollywood after Agnyathavasi and Spyder with loss over 50 Crores, the makers have pinned hopes on the second part NTR Mahanayakudu.
Ram Charan’s Vinaya Vidheya Rama has huge expectations and has been expected to be the biggest hit of this Sankranthi. Right from the first show, the film has been criticized for its sheer absurdity and over the top stunt sequences. Over time, it became a trending topic on social media and many made fun of the movie. However, it turned out to be a dud at the box office for everyone associated with the film. The film collected Rs 65 crore but the distributors have faced a loss of Rs 25 crore.
Then came Venkatesh and Varun Tej’s F2: Fun and Frustration, which is the only successful venture out of the three films. The film directed by Anil Ravipudi stars Tamannaah and Mehreen Pirzada as the female leads. The film has entered the fourth week successfully and is inching towards Rs 75 crore mark.
Rajinikanth’s Petta didn’t churn out money as there were three Telugu releases during Sankranti.
Akhil Akkineni’s Mr Majnu also tanked at the box office, leaving his career in a deep mess. Mr Majnu has been made with a budget of Rs 30 crore and its theatrical rights were sold for Rs 22 crore. Films business completely crashed to zero within one week.
