Kerala exhibitors upset with the decision of releasing Sufiyum Sujathayum directly on Amazon Prime

The coronavirus pandemic has hit the film industry very hard. All the films which were due for the release now got postponed. With the increase in financial burdens, a few producers are now opting for a direct digital release. A few days back, Amazon Prime Video has announced that it is going to digitally release seven major Indian films. One of them is the Malayalam drama Sufiyum Sujathayum. It features Jayasurya and Aditi Rao Hydari in the lead roles. This film is being directed by Naranipuzha Shanavas. This move is receiving a divided response from the Malayalam film industry. Especially, the exhibitors are quite upset with this decision.

Kerala theatre owners’ federation President Liberty Basheer spoke against this decision. He also stated that they are thinking to ban producer Vijay Babu and actor Jayasurya in the future. Meanwhile, producer Vijay Babu stated that he took the decision as there was no other option. He said that the theaters are now closed for the last two months and there are no indications of them opening anytime soon as well.

On the other hand, popular director Lijo Jose Pellissery said that producers should take a call on the medium of their film's release. He added that exhibitors should take a call on the films they want to showcase. The other producers are not sure to release their films online, considering the protest of exhibitors.
