Devadasu is one of the most popular romantic tragedy tales in Indian art history. People often consider it the greatest love story as well. Devdas is a novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. It got published in 1917. After that, many people adapted it to films and theatre plays. Devdas got made as a film in many languages. Legendary actor Akkineni Nageshwara Rao adapted it to the Telugu cinema. He made the film Devadasu in 1953. The film eventually became a classic and a landmark film in the career of ANR. Today is its 77th release anniversary. On this occasion, here is a recap into it.
 
Devadasu traces the story of Devadasu and Parvati who are in love since their childhood. Parvati's father opposes this relationship and married her to a Zamindar. Unable to digest the pain, Devadasu becomes a drunkard and goes into a self-destructive mode. Will he meet Parvati ever again forms the main crux of the film.
 
The film got directed by Vedantam Raghavaiah. Savitri played the role of Parvati and Lalitha played the role of Chadramukhi in it. SV Ranga Rao had also essayed a pivotal role in the movie. The music of the film got composed of CR Subbaraman. The film had 11 songs in total and all of them were hits. Tracks like Antha Branthi Yena, Jagame Maya, Oo Devadas, Kudi Yedamaithe, and Palleku Podam remained as classics. It had a simultaneous release in both Tamil and Telugu. Both the versions became highly successful at the box office.
