After proving his talent as a child artist in the late 80s, Mahesh Babu made his debut as a lead hero with 1999 film Rajakumarudu. This film was a major success at the box office. With the high given by his debut film, Mahesh came up with his second film Yuvaraju in 2000. This YVS Chowdhary directorial remained as a musical hit in Mahesh's career. Yuvaraju had hit the screens on 14th April 2000. It has clashed at the box office with Mani Ratnam's Sakhi. The film featured Sakshi Shivanand and Simran as the female leads. The film follows the story of Srinivas (Mahesh Babu) who falls in love with Srivalli (Sakshi Shivanand). When they are getting engaged, Sri Latha (Simran) enters their lives and turns the events entirely. What was the relationship between Srinivas and Sri Latha and how it affected his life with Sri Valli forms the rest of the story.
Yuvaraju got produced by Burugupalli Shivaramakrishna. Ajayan Vincent has handled the cinematography of it. Music composed by Mani Sharma is one of the major highlights of the film. Songs like Gunthalakadi, Manasemo, Tholi Valape and Haira Debba became huge hits during those times. The film also gave Mahesh the tag, 'Prince.' It got later dubbed into Hindi as Ek Aur Rajkumar. This is the first and last film in the combination of Mahesh and YVS Chowdhary. In the same year, Mahesh came up with another film called Vamsi.
