Director Priyadarshan's long-pending film, Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, was supposed to release in theatres in 2020. The film was postponed multiple times due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. For the past few weeks, reports suggested that the big-budget film will be skipping theatrical releases. Producer Antony Perumbavoor held multiple level talks with theatre owners and distributors regarding the release of Marakkar. However, the talks did not yield fruit, which resulted in the OTT release of Marakkar. Reportedly, the film will release sometime around Christmas.
Speaking to the media, Antony Perumbavoor said, "I have tried my best and held several rounds of negotiations. Nothing has resulted from the meetings. I have no choice other than to release the movie on an OTT platform." The Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK) President, Anchal Vijayakumar shared his perspective and said, "We had guaranteed 500 screens and Rs 15 crore as the minimum guarantee. When the producer still backs out, it means he has entered into some sort of a deal with certain OTT platforms." Antony Perumbavoor refuted the claims and said that only 89 theatres agreed to his demands. An announcement regarding the film's release date will be made in the coming weeks.
