The coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown have turned out to be advantages for the OTT platforms. As everyone got confined to their homes, people opted to the digital platforms to watch movies and web series. There are already major players in the OTT arena like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+Hotstar. But none of these platforms turned out to be a big player in the lockdown. It was the MX Player which witnessed a massive growth during these pandemic times. The visitor count of the MX player is more than Disney+Hotstar.
According to the Comscore report, MX player had 141 million sole visitors in the month of March. It witnessed a growth of 8% from its February count of 130 million. Disney+Hotstar took a backseat and gained a follower count of 131 million in March. Youtube stands in first place with 360 million sole visitors. But Youtube is user-generated content and is different from the other streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Comscore gave this report in the statement, "COVID-19 and its impact on Digital Media Consumption in India." The statement reported that India witnessed a growth of 12% in internet usage during this lockdown.
Meanwhile, Karan Bedi, CEO of MX Player said that the last two months were quite remarkable. He stated that MX Player truly caters to Mass India. He added that they have deep acumen for tie I-VI. He also said that they are different from premium players like Netflix and Prime Video.
