The ongoing lockdown has made many producers consider the option of releasing their films directly on an OTT platform. While some of them went for it, some others didn't. The latter wants to wait until the theatres get reopened. But now, they are facing another issue from the OTT platforms. The streaming sites are demanding producers to release the movies which already made a deal long back.
A few makers made digital deals when their films were still on the sets. They have also decided on the OTT release dates. But the coronavirus pandemic has ruined all the plans. Leave the OTT release date, the films are yet to hit the theatres. Some of such films have crossed theatrical and OTT release dates as well. The streaming platforms are demanding the producers of those films to release those films directly online as the OTT release date has also got crossed. This has become a headache for the producers now. Most of the films that were actually scheduled for the release in March and the first week of April had their OTT release dates in June. Now, those films are facing this issue from digital platforms.
Every week, we are getting to know about a few films which are opting for a direct digital release. Already, Ponmagal Vandhaal and Gulabo Sithaabo had their direct online release. Next up will be Penguin which will premiere on Amazon Prime Video this Friday. Later, films like Gunjan Saxena and Shakuntala Devi will also directly land on the OTT platforms.
