#MeToo movement has taken the Indian film industry by a storm during late 2018. Many filmmakers and actors got accused of molesting and physical harassment. It all started after actress Tanusri Datta accused Nana Patekar of physically harassing her. Later, many other film celebrities like Alok Nath, Sajid Khan, and Vikas Behl got accused in the #MeToo cases. Even down the south, there are a few celebrities who got accused of physical harassment. Now, a young Malayalam actress has alleged that popular director Kamal has physically harassed her. Kamal is also the chairman of Kerala State Chalanachitra Academy. The actress has filed a police complaint on Kamal.
According to her statement, Kamal promised the actress a prominent role in his film Pranaya Meenukalude Kadal. Apparently, he promised this role in return to the 'worst' act done by him. The actress further stated that it happened during the shoot of the 2018 film Aami. Two other actresses have also called out on Kamal for behaving 'cheaply' with them. A popular Malayalam news channel has broken out this information. The actress called the director a double-faced individual. She also said that Kamal is a highly deceptive person, in her statement.
This incident became a black mark on Kamal, who is in the industry for more than three decades. He is best known for films like Mizhineerppoovukal, Ulladakam, Karutha Pakshikal, and Celluloid. Many of Kamal's films won National and Kerala State Awards. The police are currently investigating the case. We will get further details on the issue after a few days. On the whole, this incident has raised the #MeToo movement yet again. We have to see how the Malayalam film industry responds to the issue.
