Superstar Rajinikanth was last seen in director AR Murugadoss's Darbar, which released for Pongal 2020. The film, in which Rajinikanth played a cop, received lukewarm reviews from the box office. Back in 2020, he began shooting for his upcoming film Annaatthe which is being directed by Siruthai Siva. However, the shooting had to be halted due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Back in December 2020, Rajinikanth and the rest of the team resumed the shoot at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. unfortunately, four of the crew members tested positive for the novel coronavirus, which pushed the makers to halt the film.

On January 25, Sun Pictures, the production house of Annaatthe surprised the audience by announcing the film's release date. They released a poster with Annaatthe's release date. The production house wrote on Twitter, "#Annaatthe will be releasing on November 4th, 2021! Get ready for #AnnaattheDeepavali! @rajinikanth @directorsiva @KeerthyOfficial @immancomposer." Annaatthe is tipped to be a rural entertainer starring Rajinikanth, Nayanthara, Keerthy Suresh, Khushbu Sundar, Meena, Prakash Raj and Soori. The film has music composed by D Imman. The shooting of the film is expected to resume sometime in February.
