Sharada is one of the prominent actresses in the South Indian cinema. Fondly called as Urvashi, she has acted in various memorable roles in a career spanning over more than six decades. Today is her 75th birthday. On this occasion, here is a look back into her career.
Sharada was born in Tenali of the erstwhile Madras Presidency. She grew up in Madras at her grandmother's place. She started learning dance at the age of six. She used to give performances at the temple festivals and various other cultural events. Eventually, she entered theater which resulted in her film debut. Sharada forayed into films with the 1955 Telugu film Kanyasulkam. She played a minor role in this movie. She got her first breakthrough with the 1961 film Iddaru Mithrulu. After the success of this movie, she started getting offers in Tamil and Malayalam as well.
Eventually, Sharada became a huge star in Malayalam. This resulted her in doing more films in Malayalam than other languages. She is a three-time National Award Winner. She won it for the first time in 1968 for the Malayalam film Thulabaram. After that, she won in 1972 for another Malayalam film Swayamvaram. In 1977, she won for the third time, for the Telugu film Nimajjanam.
Sharada also served in politics as well. She used to work for the Telugu Desam Party. She was last seen in the 2015 Malayalam film Ammakoru Thaattu. Her last Telugu film was the 2013 drama Sukumarudu.
