Superstar Rajinikanth was supposed to begin his political party in January. However, his ill health forced him to change his decision. In December 2020, Rajinikanth was admitted to a private hospital due to severe fluctuations in blood pressure. He was discharged after a few days. Post his recovery, Rajinikanth wrote an elaborate note explaining his health condition and his decision to not enter politics. Though a section of fans welcomed the decision, others were clearly disappointed. Some of his fans, who were former members of Rajinikanth Makkal Mandram, protested against him at Valluvar Kottam in Chennai.
Following the protest, Rajinikanth issued a note that read, "I appreciate the protest which was done in Chennai but it was done without RMM's (Rajinikanth Makkal Mandram) permission. thank those who didn't participate in it. I've already explained why I'm not entering Politics. Please don't compel me and hurt me further. Some of my fans along with expelled cadres of Rajini Makkal Mandram have protested in Chennai against my decision of not entering politics. I have taken my decision, I appeal to everyone to not indulge in such things (protest) as it pains me."
