Master, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring Thalapathy Vijay, is slated to be released in Japan in 2021. The film, titled Sensei, is set to be released in Japan on November 18, 2022.
Master is the most recent South Indian film to receive a Japanese distribution. Recently, SS Rajamouli's famous commercial entertainment RRR was released in Japan, and the celebrated filmmaker traveled there with the film's two key actors, NTR Jr, and Ram Charan.
Tamil films are claimed to have a sizable audience in Japan, thanks to Superstar Rajinikanth's Muthu, which became a cult smash there, with the actor becoming a household name. Many of Rajini's films have now been released in Japan, much to his fans' joy.
Interestingly, Master will be Lokesh Kanagaraj's second film to be released in Japan. Kaithi, his 2019 action picture starring Karthi that launched what is now known as the LCU (Lokesh Kanagaraj Cinematic Universe), was released in Japan in November 2021 under the title Kaithi Dilli.
Master, starring Vijay Sethupathi as the antagonist and Malavika Mohanan as the female protagonist, was about an alcoholic college professor who sobers up after a tragedy and goes after a merciless mobster who uses juvenile convicts as puppets in his criminal organization. It remains to be seen whether the film, which revitalized the theatre economy in the midst of the epidemic, can do the same in Japan.
