Kizie Basu (Sanjana Sanghi) is a cancer patient who spends a lonely life. Then comes Immanuel Rajkumar Jr. aka Manny (Sushant Singh Rajput) who adds colors in Kizie's world. Soon, we realize that even Manny is a cancer patient. Their destiny doesn't stop Kizie and Manny to fall for each other. How they spent their days together forms the main crux of the story.
It is heartening and heartbreaking to see Sushant Singh Rajput in this movie. The talented actor once again delivers a superlative performance but it is heartbreaking to know that this is the last piece of art we could see from him. Sushant lived in the role of Manny right from the first frame to the last. Be it a comical scene or an emotional one, he aced it with ease. The same is the case with Sanjana Sanghi. This is her first full-length role as a heroine. She gives and enduring performance like a pro. Sanjana is a talent to look out for. It would be great if she does more films in the future. Saswata Chatterjee and Swastika Mukherjee gave fine acts as Sanjana's parents. Sahil Vaid was excellent in his role. Saif Ali Khan was brilliant in his little cameo.
The first thing we should talk about is the music composed by AR Rahman. The musical maestro is the second hero of the film, after Sushant Singh Rajput. Rahman lifts the entire mood of the film with his scintillating album and background score. Every song in the film is a soulful composition. The cinematography by Setu is good. The visuals are rich and appealing. Production values by Fox Star Studios are very good. Writers Shashank Khaitan and Suprotim Sengupta did a fantastic job of adapting the novel to suit the Indian sensibilities. Their screenplay is taut and engaging.
Casting director Mukesh Chhabra made his directorial debut with this movie. He chose to adapt the popular novel The Fault In Our Stars, suiting the sensibilities of the Indian audiences. The Fault In Our Stars was already made as a movie in English. Both the film and the book were huge hits in India. Thus, it was a tough task for Mukesh and his writers to live up to the expectations. They should get commended for keeping the soul intact and delivering a heart-touching drama. Right from the first scene, the film keeps you hooked. We travel with the lead characters. They make us laugh, dance, and cry. Dil Bechara is a film that is very heavy at its heart. It becomes heavier to watch it as the last outing of Sushant. This is a film that should get celebrated. This is a definite watch for Sushant, his fans, people who believe in love and life. Celebrate his work and embrace it. Dil Bechara is a film that takes you on an emotional roller-coaster ride. Do watch it.
