Director Ravi Kiran Kola's Raja Vaaru Rani Garu has a simple storyline and it is where the film's screenplay comes into play. Raja (Kiran Abbavaram) is so in love with his childhood crush Rani (Rahasya Gorak). Raja is not vocal and hence he struggles in communicating his love for her.
Raja's love for Rani never diminishes even when she leaves the village for three years to pursue higher studies. How Raja and Rani end up with each other forms the rest of the story.
Kiran Abbavaram, as the shy guy who struggles in exposing his love for her, is perfect for the role. His shy demeanor works well and hence the majority of the film brings a smile onto one's face.
Rahasya Gorak is impressive with her performance and emotes with her eyes. Her powerful act, especially in the climax, will move you and makes you emotional. Now, she's an actress to watch out for.
Raja Vaaru Rani Garu's strength lies in the two friend characters, Chowdhury and Naidu. Their comedy timing and screen presence invoke a lot of laughter which brings in the much-needed lightness to the film.
Rajkumar Kasireddy who essays the role of Chowdary is exceptional with his comedy dialogues. Whenever he's on the screen, he is hilarious.
Raja Vaaru Rani Garu's story is not unique or peculiar. The story is a usual love story that can take a cliched route. However, director Ravi Kiran Kolda's screenplay makes all the difference.
The film could have ended up like the several hundred love stories that we have seen all year. Yet, the director handled the script in a simple manner that evokes nostalgia and puts a smile across the face.
The first half of Raja Vaaru Rani Garu is its advantage as it was filled with moments between the friends and school romance, which are endearing to look at.
The camera work in Raja Vaaru Rani Gaaru instantly takes you to the Godavari as it establishes the landscape exceptionally well. Most of the frames tell us how the beautiful Godavari is and things that we fail to see with our eyes.
Since this is an ordinary love story that relies much on the screenplay, a lot depends on the film's conflict. Sadly, the director doesn't introduce a conflict that could make things better for the viewers.
The second half of Raaja Vaaru Rani Gaaru becomes slow as it lacks the humor it had in the first half of the film.
Raaja Vaaru Rani Garu takes the audience on a trip down the memory lane and re-introduces the concept of old school romance. If you are a lover of old school romance, this film is a perfect choice for the weekend.
