Actor Sumalatha defeats Karnataka CM son as independent by 2.5L votes !
Actor and Independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh defeated Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil in the Mandya constituency. The 55-year-old, who is the widow of popular actor-turned-politician MH Ambareesh, is first independent MP from Karnataka in 52 years and only third in its history.
She was backed by Kannada actors Darshan, Yash and producer 'Rockline' Venkatesh. Sumalatha was the underdog from Mandya, up against the might of the JD(S). She won the Mandya seat by defeating Nikhil Kumaraswamy, son of Karnataka CM, by 125,622 votes.
After the demise of her husband in November last year, in March, she decided to contest as an independent candidate after the Congress denied her a ticket from the sugarcane growing region of Mandya, about 100 km from Bengaluru. What followed was a bitter battle in the district’s recent history, as the campaign against Sumalatha got uglier with each passing day.
“The challenge is huge as I am up against the ruling party. All eight legislators are from JD(S), three of them are ministers, CM, ex-PM and the might of their other family members," Sumalatha had told in an earlier interaction. “I knew the pulse of the people of Mandya," she added
