At least 12 dead and dozens missing from capsized Godavari tourist boat
A tourist boat carrying more than 60 people, including 9 crew members, has capsized on the swollen Godavari River near Kachchurluru, East Godavari District. The tourists were headed to famous Papikondalu from Gandipochamma temple situated near Devipatnam. With an uneven river flow, the boat was capsized leaving everyone in the boat to get drowned.
Rescue operations continue near the location of the accident. The home minister of India's Andhra Pradesh state says 12 people have been killed and 35 others are missing after the sightseeing boat capsized on the Godavari River.
One of the people rescued tells details of the tragic incident. He says-‘boat bent towards one side and it was in that position for a long time. A few of them jumped out. The boat then capsized and abt 20 of us got on top of it. The boat then starting sinking on 1 side.
The rescued tourists said that they were given life jackets but some of them took off as it was a very hot day. CM Jagan orders an inquiry into the incident. According to initial information, the management had permission from the Kakinada Port department. CM orders all boat services to be suspended temporarily. He also announced 10 lakh rupees to families of the deceased.
