B.S.Yeddyurappa opposes water-diversion projects
The opposition leader of the Legislative Assembly B.S.Yeddyurappa has said the proposed project to draw water from Linganamakki reservoir build over the Sharavathi in Shivamogga district to Bangalore as unscientific and non-viable.
“It is unfortunate that a detailed project report has been sought in this regard without taking into count the decline in quantum of rainfall in the catchment areas of the Sharavathi in recent times. When the entire Malnad region, including Sharavathi river valley, is reeling under an acute scarcity of rain, how is it possible to provide water from here to Bangalore” he said.
Mr. Yeddyurappa stated that it is the time for serious observation on progressing constant solutions to the drinking water problem in Bangalore.
But, dewing water from the Sharavathi may prove detrimental to the environment of the Western Ghats, he said and asked that the State government take serious measures to regenerated waterbodies in Bangalore by clearing their encroachment and thereby recharging the groundwater there. As the proposal to draw water from Linganamakki to Bangalore has summoned strong opposition in the Malnad region, the State government should change from the project, he said.
Meantime, the Malenadu Jeeva Jala Ulisi Horata Samiti and Shivamogga District Chamber of Commerce and Industries staged a protest on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner's office on here on Thursday opposing the project.
