EC restricts Mayawati and Yogi Adityanath on violating the Code of Conduct
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has barred Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for 72 hours and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati for 48 hours for violating the Election Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
Pertaining to the BSP chief Mayawati’s appeal to the Muslim voters to vote for Samajwadi Party and BSP alliance in UP, Yogi Adityanath reacted that if the Congress, SP and the BSP had faith in “Ali”, “then we also have faith in Bajrang Bali”. The Uttar Pradesh CM made these comments at a rally in Meerut which not only irked the Muslim community but has also caught the attention of the Election Commission.
The statements made by the leaders were taken into cognizance by the EC and under Article 324 of the Constitution of India which had served a show cause notices. Both the leaders submitted their reply. However, unsatisfied with their explanation, the Commission put a prohibition on their involvement in political campaigning.
The restriction on Mayawati and Yogi Adityanath starts from 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
