Election Commission disqualifies 1,570 candidates in Telangana
The State Election Commission (SEC) disqualified as many as 1,570 candidates who stood for elections to various local bodies in Telangana. The has come as a major shock to the candidates who are prepared to contest in ZPTC and MPTC elections. Non-submission of election expenditure in the previous election is listed as the reason for the step taken by the EC.
Breaking this down, 291 candidates were disqualified from contesting Zilla Parishad Territorial Council (ZPTC) and 1,279 candidates were barred from contesting Mandal Parishad Territorial Councils (MPTCs). It is a mandate that the candidates contesting has to submit their expenditure details to District Collector and the SEC which didn’t happen. “About 1,570 candidates have been disqualified for not submitting their expenditure details pertaining to the previous elections within 45 days after the polling day,” read the notification released by the SEC.
Officials concerned had submitted to the Commission details of those who did not submit details of election expenses and the Commission had sent show-cause notices to such persons according to relevant provisions.
