Facebook removes 702 pages and accounts linked to Congress: Is it favoring BJP?
“We have removed 138 pages and 549 accounts which are found connected to individuals associated with an INC IT Cell. The page admins and account owners are observed to be posting about local news and political issues, including the upcoming elections, candidate views, and criticism of political opponents including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),” stated the Facebook India in the recent release.
With the Lok Sabha elections fast approaching, the Facebook is being iron-fisted towards the pages and accounts that are spreading fake news which gives scope to the unnecessary disturbances amidst the political heats. The top social networking site is also taking measures to regulate political advertisements. But is Facebook fair enough with all the parties? No seems to be the answer from the majority of the political analysts.
Leaders from the opposition party have already raised the issue that Facebook is indirectly benefitting the BJP as they will have an undue advantage over the Congress following the removal of their accounts. The reports also revealed that BJP is one of the highest spenders on political campaigns on Facebook in India. Pertaining to this, is Facebook acting in favor of its biggest client in India?
Facebook has faced the same allegations during America's Presidential elections where it was accused of promoting Trump. The political ads in support to Trump were successful in driving the neutral voters to turn in support for him rejecting Hillary Clinton. Later, reports revealed that even Trump has invested lump sum amounts on the social media ads during his campaign for Presidency. On this note, the Indian social media analysts started speculating if the same thing is going to happen with Modi government who created a record for devising one of the best marketing strategies in the world in 2014.
The BJP’s social media team is making sure that no stone is unturned especially with Facebook and YouTube to reach every possible voter in all corners of the country. On this hand, there is a necessity for Facebook to clarify the allegations made by the Opposition.
