Farmers led by Nallamada Rythu Sangham on Thursday staged a sit-in in front of multinational PepsiCo plant at Tummalapalem village in Guntur district demanding immediate withdrawal of cases slapped by the company against farmers in Gujarat.
Earlier, in the recent past four farmers from Gujarat have been slapped with cases for ‘illegally’ growing potatoes of a certain variety that has been registered by PepsiCo India. This potato variety is used in the manufacture of ‘Lays’ chips.
Demanding damages worth Rs 1.05 crore from each farmer, the company claims that it had registered this variety with the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Act 2001.
Farmers during their protest claimed that, “PepsiCo’s intention is to threaten the Indian farmers and make this as a precedent. We condemn the action of filing a suit against our brothers who are toiling to feed the Indian people.”
