The 88-year old former Defence Minsiter in the Vajpayee government George Fernandes passed away on Tuesday in New Delhi.
Fernandes was suffering from Alzheimer's disease and was recently affected by swine flu.The family is awaiting his son Sean Fernandes' to proceed with funeral arrangements. The funeral is held in New Delhi.
As a defence minister, he oversaw the Pokhran nuclear test of 1988 and the Kargil war in 1999.He was also a key member in the Janata Dal and later founded as the Samata Party in 1994, which merged with Janata Dal (United).
"George Sahab represented the best of India’s political leadership.Frank and fearless, forthright and farsighted, he made a valuable contribution to our country. He was among the most effective voices for the rights of the poor and marginalised.Saddened by his passing away." tweeted Prime Minister Modi. He also recalls George Fernandes as a visionary Railway minister and a Defence Minister who made India safe & strong.
