Maoists in Odisha shot the polling staff
Amidst the election rush all around, Maoists in Odisha created havoc at Barahla village under Gochhapada Police limits of Kandhamal district right before the second phase of elections on Wednesday.
As per the media reports, a woman election officer, Sanjkuta Digal and three other polling staff were on the way to Barahla booth on poll duty in a vehicle with election equipment. The eyewitness claim that the officer was shot dead when she got down from the vehicle to check a suspicious object lying on the road while passing through a jungle near Balandapada village.
Though three of the four persons escaped unhurt, Sanjukta was hit by a bullet on her head and died on the spot. “There was a landmine explosion in front of our vehicle and we had a narrow escape. To save us, the driver drove back amid heavy firing,” said Prakash Chandra Das, another poll official who was present in the vehicle.
This incident has alerted the central forces which have deployed a command centre for further investigation and tight security measures are taken. The polling here is scheduled from 7 AM to 4 PM being Naxals prone areas.
