Minister Nirmala Sitaraman says Tamil during Budget speech after five years
After a long time, Tamil was again heard in the Lok Sabha during the Budget speech. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman, before reading the report, quoted a poem form Sangam collection Purananoor, which stated that a government must not pressurize its citizens by levying heavy taxes.
“At this juncture, I find wisdom in a line form Purananooru, a Tamil Sangam-era work by Pisirandaiyaar. The verse, “Yaanai Pugundha Nilam” was sung as an idea to the King Pandian Arivudai Nambi,” Minister said.
The last time Tamil was heard in the house was in 2014 when P Chidambaram was presenting the interim Budget. He read a passage from Thirukkuraj, “Not the spear but sceptre swayed with equity alone gives the ruler victory.”
