Om Birla, a two-term BJP MP from Kota, has been nominated by the ruling party for the post of speaker of the Lok Sabha.
Om Birla is unanimously elected as Lok Sabha Speaker. Prime Minister Narendra Modi leads Mr. Birla to the Speaker chair. Leader of all parliamentary parties joins him.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi thanks the pro-tem Speaker Virendra Kumar, the panel of presiding officers and the Lok Sabha Secretary General and her team.
Mr. Birla thanks the Prime Minister and all members who have elected him as the Speaker.
Mr. Birla recalls he was a member in the House earlier. ''Lakhs of people have reposed faith on us. Our electors expect us to take up their issues in the House. The post of Speaker should not only be impartial but look impartial. We are the largest democracy. We have the responsibility of keeping up the faith of people who stood in queues for hours to elect us.''
PM Narendra Modi speaks. Welcoming the Speaker, Mr. Modi says it's a proud moment for all of us to have a person like Mr. Birla, who has been actively involved in politics since college days.
"I have had the privilege of working with Mr. Birla," Mr. Modi says and calls Kota the 'Kashi of education.' He credits Mr. Birla for transforming Kota as the hub for education.
