Heavy summer rain and strong winds that lasted for about 30 minutes in the hilly tracts of Konni taluk on Monday once again left a trail of disaster.
Many trees were uprooted and some of them fell on the roofs of buildings and vehicles causing damage to public property. As many as 26 houses were damaged at Malayalappuzha village and four houses destroyed in the calamity, official sources said.
Not less than 47 houses in the Vallicaud-Kottayam village were damaged in the rain, sources said. Plantain crops were widely destroyed in the wind and the Agriculture Department was yet to carry out the extent of crop loss, the villagers said.
The damage was maximum in Ward No 10, 11, 12 and 16 of Pramadom grama panchayat, sources said.
The whirlwind wreaked havoc in Kozhikkunnam colony, Elakkulam colony, Valliyani, and Potheepad areas in the Malayalappuzha grama panchayat.
