Ratan Tata, one of India's wealthiest men is well known for his philanthropy. Now amid the Coronavirus pandemic that has taken over the world, Ratan Tata has committed Rs. 500 crores to tackle the health crisis. The funds will be used to purchase necessary medical equipment for medical personnel on the frontline. Ratan Tata himself called the ongoing crisis an exceptionally difficult period. He said, "In this exceptionally difficult period, I believe that urgent emergency resources need to be deployed to cope with the needs of fighting the COVID-19 crisis, which is one of the toughest challenges the human race will face."
Ratan Tata also said that the current situation needs an immediate response. "The Tata Trusts, Tata Sons and the Tata Group companies are joined by committed local and global partners as well as the government to fight this crisis on a united public health collaboration platform, which will strive to reach out to sections that are underprivileged and deprived," he added.
Meanwhile, Tata Sons which is the principal holding group of the Tata group has also made a donation worth Rs. 1000 crores. N. Chandrasekharan, the current chairman of Tata sons also addressed the issue and said, "The current situation is worrisome and requires our very best action. We will work together with the Tata Trusts and our Chairman Emeritus Mr. Tata and would be fully supporting their initiatives, and work in a collaborative manner to bring the full expertise of the group."
Many Bollywood celebrities have also made large contributions to the government in order to control the virus. Akshay Kumar recently made a contribution of Rs. 25 crores and urged his fans and followers to take health protocols seriously and stay home.
