Tension prevailed in Vedaranyam after caste violence

Tension prevailed in Vedaranyam and surrounding areas in Nagapattinam district of the province following clashes between caste Hindus and Dalits on Sunday evening. Police sources said a clash erupted between a group belonging to caste Hindus and Dalits around 5 pm, when a car within which Pandiyan, a resident of Vedaranyam, and his supporters were movement hit Ramachandran of Vedaranyam, leaving him harmed. He was admitted to Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvaur.
After hitting Ramachandran, Pandiyan had run towards the police station and took exile there. Police sources said Pandiyan is one in all the functionaries of a caste outfit of a dominant community, whereas Ramachandran could be a Dalit. A gang torched a car and additionally hurled stones against the police station. In retaliation, another gang desecrated an Ambedkar statue close to a bus stand at Vedaranyam.
Condemning the desecration of the Ambedkar statue, VCK members staged protests in Nagapattinam, Nagore and Thirumarugal. Around four hundred police personnel are deployed in and around Vedaranyam city. DIG J Loganathan said things were under control. two people have sustained injuries, he said.
