Thodupuzha boy’s mother arrested

Thodupuzha boy’s mother arrested

The Thodupuzha police on Friday arrested Archana, 36, the mother of a seven-year-old assault victim, who died at a hospital in Kolencherry on April 6.

She was the second accused in the case in which the first accused and her live-in partner Arun Anand was arrested. He is in remand at the Muttom sub-jail.

She was arrested under Sections 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender) and 212 (harbouring offender). The police summoned her from a counselling centre at Koothattukulam and registered her arrest at 12.45 p.m.

Four days ago, the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) had ordered the police to register a case against her under the Juvenile Justice Act. The four-year-old younger brother of the victim, who was also assaulted by the first accused, was entrusted to the care of his parental grandfather living in Thiruvananthapuram.

The woman was the only witness to the attack and had cooperated with the police in giving the details, according to a police officer who led the inquiry team.

The police wanted to make her an approver in the court. Joseph Augustine, CWC chairperson, said it was for the police to decide on this.

The boy came under attack early March 28 and was admitted to a hospital in Thodupuzha in a very serious condition.

Suspicious hospital authorities informed the police, who shifted the boy to the hospital at Kolencherry where he was given ventilator support. He died on April 6.
