KPCC working president and MP-elect of Kannur K. Sudhakaran has said that the Congress and the UDF will highlight the Sabarimala issue in the coming Assembly election as well to defeat the LDF and BJP candidates.
Addressing a meet-the-press programme here on Monday, Mr. Sudhakaran said that the electoral defeat of the CPI(M) in the State reflected the people’s anger at the culture of political violence and the recent murder of Youth Congress workers. It also reflected the people’s protest against the governance of the LDF government over the past three years, he added.
He said that both the LDF and the BJP were equally responsible for complicating the Sabarimala issue. The BJP, he said, had fielded Ayyappa devotees in the streets to protest without doing anything to protect the traditional customs. The electoral verdict showed that the people of the State accepted the impartial stance of the UDF over the Sabarimala issue.
Reiterating his demand for the resignation of Chief Minister owning moral responsibility for the defeat of the LDF, Mr. Sudhakaran said that many senior party leaders were voicing their concerns about the ‘wrong stand’ taken by the LDF government on the Sabarimala issue.
He also said that he had concerns about the future Central support to the State which was standing as a powerful opposition to the ruling NDA government. As an MP, he would take more efforts to bring infrastructure development including the development of National Highway in his constituency.
He said that the Congress was ready to accept the CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury’s call for building a secular front.
