The story of Lagaan is set in the pre-Independence era, where we were still under the colonial rule of the Britishers. It revolves around central character Bhuvan who challenges the British Raj to play a cricket match with the villagers. If the villagers win the game, they don't need to pay taxes for the next three years. How the challenge turned their lives, forms the main crux of the story.
The music got composed by AR Rahman. All the songs were chartbuster and people still enjoy listening to them. Tracks like Radha Kaise Na Jale, Chale Chalo, Ghanan Ghanan and Mitwa remained as classics in the history of Indian Cinema.
Lagaan won a lot of accolades and awards across the world. It won eight Filmfare Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. It was in the final five nominations of Best Foreign Film category in the 74th Academy Awards. It lost to Bosnian film No Man's Land. Even though it lost, Lagaan made everyone proud by going till the last round.
