Actress Richa Chadda recently weighed in into the fight between many producers and theatre owners regarding the release of films. Chadda said that she believes the decision to release a film in theatres or on a digital platform resides in the hands of a producer.
The fight began last month when Shoojit Sircar's Gulabo Sitabo starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan chose to opt for a digital release. Soon after that other films like Laxmmi Bomb starring Akshay Kumar and Shakuntala Devi starring Vidya Balan also followed the trend. Both PVR and INOX later released statements expressing their disapproval of this decision.
Richa Chadda in her interview with IANS said, "It's the producer's choice. It's entirely up to the producer. If there is a date in line and the OTT ensures that a lot of people will watch the film, then obviously they will choose to go for that, because even after the theatres open it is unclear how long people will take to re-enter the theatres." Chadha also appeared in a digital show recently titled Inside Edge. The show recently premiered on Amazon Prime Video.
The Panga actress also said that she doesn't have any biases against either mediums. She added saying, 'I don't think OTT or cinema -- any one of them is better than the other. Cinema definitely is something we all wanted to do, see ourselves on the big screen and be a part of films. But in these unprecedented circumstances one has to ensure that our films are watched irrespective of the medium.'
