Kollywood has lost its legendary actor-director. Meenakshisundaram Ramasamy Viswanathan, popularly known as Visu passed away on 22nd March 2020. He was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. He took his last breathes in the same hospital.
Visu was a multifaceted stage and cinema personality. He started his career as stage actor and writer. Visu scripted popular films, including Rajinikanth's Netrikann and Thillu Mullu. After enjoying a successful career as a scriptwriter, Visu debuted as an actor in the film Kudumbam Oru Kadhambam.
Visu soon became a household name with family entertainers such as Thirumathi Oru Vegumathi, Samsaram Adhu Minsaram and Penmani Aval Kanmani. Samsaram Adhu Minsaram, Visu's most acclaimed film was the first Tamil film to win a National Award for the "Best Popular Film.”
Visu went on to make his directorial debut with Kanmani Poonga. Some of his famous films include Manal Kayiru and Penmani Aval Kanmani. He won yet another National award for his film Neenga Nalla Irukkanum. The film was also the last on-screen appearance of actor turned politician J Jayalalithaa.
Visu was popular for his social films. He depicted issues such as dowry harassment, widow remarriage, inter-family conflict etc.
Visu was a versatile personality. At the advent of the new millennium, Visu gained popularity as a character actor and then went on to star as a host on tv programs such as Arattai Arangam and Visuvin Makkal Arangam.
Visu was last in the film Manal Kayiru 2 in 2016. After Manal Kayiru 2 stepped away from the industry to concentrate on his health.
The news of his death has brought a sense of gloom to the industry. May he rest in peace.
