Waltair Veerayya Review - Story

Set in Vizag, the plot follows Seethapathi (Rajendra Prasad) seething for revenge at Solomon Caesar (Bobby Simha), a drug lord for a massacre. He enlists the help of Waltair Veerayya (Chiranjeevi), who comes along but has a ulterior motive. What he does and what happens forms the rest of the story.

Waltair Veerayya Review - Analysis

Bobby's writing is predictable and over the top. Setting expectations straight, it is a routine template revenge plot that involves multiple arcs that can be guessed. However, the way Bobby has written the story is somewhat entertaining. Its a true fanboy moment when his writing is lathered with effective Megastar references and on top of that a coherent plot that whilst routine is executed really well. The comedy, though, is not effective and drags the movie down. There could have been better writing in the second half, particularly with the brothers arc and climax as he didn't know how to end the story.

Bobby's screenplay also helps this and his direction is the sole reason the movie moves along. For such a thin plot, the screenplay keeps the movie moving and a good rate and every scene contributed to the plot to somewhat keep the movie on edge.

The first half is typical commercial mass but done well. We haven't seen this in a while to this level in the sense that every scene is entertaining despite following a formula, especially the Boss intro fight and the interval bang. DSP's BGM is throughout there too and keeps the viewers entertained, when the comedy doesn't which it almost always does.

A big reason for this is the Megastar himself. He does go overboard at times, but he fills the hall with infectious energy and is a Riot overall. Love seeing him like this! Ravi Teja is next, with his yaaasa and his screen presence massifying everything. What I liked is Bobby's attention to characters and the fact that he fleshed out every character somewhat. Shruti Haasan has a role, bigger than the one she got yesterday. Bobby Simha has a good role too. Prakash Raj does well. Rajendra Prasad fits the bill.

The second half is poor though, despite some gaps in the writing, Particularly with the references, comedy, and Chiru RT scenes in the flashback. The climax does go downhill and sours it even further.

DSP's BGM is through the roof and helps the movie. Cinematography is good, editing could have been better; the movie ran a bit too long. Production values are solid.

Waltair Veerayya Review - Verdict

Overall, Waltair Veerayya is Bobby's best work, but that isn't saying much. Positives are Chiru, RT, BGM, and first half. The second half is poor though and hurts the movie, resulting in a mixed experience. If you can overcome that, you might have a fun time.
