Nani hits a sixer with this emotional sports-drama
Arjun (played by Nani) is leading a miserable life despite having his lovable wife Sarah (played by Shraddha Srinath) and an adorable kid Nani (played by Ronit Kamra). He quit playing cricket 10 years ago and he feels like he lost a part of his life. He becomes an irresponsible husband leaving his wife take the responsibility of the family.
His son requests him a birthday gift: the jersey of the Indian cricket team. He struggles to spend Rs 500 to buy the gift and in those three days, he realises that he hates himself. He wants to have a new lease of life and attempts to redeem his career. Will he be successful at it?
Nani as Arjun is picture perfect as a right-hand batsman. His technique is brilliant and it shows how much hard work he has put into effect the role. His expressions are apt for every given situation and he makes you root for him.
Shraddha Srinath as Sarah is extraordinary and she has literally made a cracker of a debut with Jersey. As a supporting wife and girlfriend, she is a person who we'd wish to have in life.
Sathyaraj plays the role of an assistant coach Murthy. He is not just Arjun's coach, but also a father figure for him. As a senior actor, he has the right dosage of expressions in his wife.
Director Gowtam Tinnanuri's hard work is visible in each and every frame. His detailing is extremely good and there is no continuity miss in the film which happens in different period of time.
The script does not waste time in exploring how Arjun was when he was successful in his career. It concentrates more on his current life and establishes how miserable Arjun feels without cricket in his life.
Jersey is not the usual sports drama which will show the successful journey of a cricketer. It has much more emotions and traces the life of a failed cricketer who wants another shot at life.
Gowtam has to be lauded for choosing the perfect cast who have delivered their best performances.
Anirudh Ravichander's songs and background music need special mention as it elevates each and every frame in the movie. There are several BGMs that has made us tear up in emotional moments.
If Gowtam was the hero of Jersey, cinematographer Sanu Varghese is another hero who has lit up Jersey. Every frame is picture perfect and the tone maintained throughout the film is apt.
The first half of Jersey might move at a slow pace, but it is not really a disadvantage for the emotional journey it takes us through in the second half.
Jersey is the film, a film buff should never miss. It grabs your attention right from the first frame and holds it till the end. The ending is bitter-sweet and Gowtam needs to be lauded for being gutsy to have written such a climax for a sports-drama.
