Joji is directed by Dileesh Pothan and stars Fahadh Faasil, Babu Raj, PN Sunny, Unnimaya Prasad, Joji Mundakayam, Alister Alex, Basil Josephh, Shammi Thilekan in various lead roles. The film is currently streaming on Amazon prime video.
The film is based in Kottayam and follows the story of a wealthy family as they deal with family tensions and greed. When the father figure is paralysed after a stroke, his three sons greedily try to divide the property between themselves. Among the three brothers Joji is regarded the least as his businesses keep failing. This drives joji to madness as he is hated by his own father. In an attempt to achieve his plans Joji does the unthinkable and kills his own father and later his brother, before finally attempting to commit suicide.
Joji is led by Fahadh Fassil who plays the titular role of Joji. From his half cargo pants to his behaviour, Joji’s on screen behaviour matches every bit of complexity that the script demands. Fassil looks scared, and scary at the same time during multiple parts of the film. Unnimaya Prasad also deserves praise for her acting as she paints the family into the light of reality. Prasad and Fassil’s chemistry shines through and it portrays the family tensions superbly well. Other actors around them including Baburaj and Basil Joseph also deliver great performances in the film.
Joji is a fast paced film that holds the attention of its viewers from the very beginning. The film takes little time to jump straight to some of its main themes of greed and violence. While the acting is superb it is only supported by an intelligent script that helps draw the viewer’s curiosity. The film takes heavy inspiration from the Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth and does justice to it.
With a film like this there is not much to fault. However, one could easily hope that the filmmakers provided more backstory to the hatred between Joji's father and Joji. The film also ends at an arbitrary note which might not sit well with all viewers.
Joji is a film that is definitely worth a watch if you are a fan of thriller family drama. In many ways it replicates the tensions from the Oscar winning film parasite and that comparison alone makes it worthwhile a watch.
