Kalank one word review: A visual grandeur with toned performances
Kalank is a multi-starrer wedged during India’s Partition era. The story is based in a town called Husnabad, near Lahore which has a majority of Muslims. Dev (Aditya Roy Kapur) is the son of Balraj (Sanjay Dutt) who is from Chaudhrys family, one of the well-to-do families in Husnabad. Tending to certain circumstances, Dev gets married to Roop (Alia Bhatt) who later falls in love with Zafar (Varun Dhawan), the local blacksmith. From here on the story takes interesting turns with complex relationships and ill-fated romances which are often predictable. On the whole ‘Kalank’ is a tale of eternal love and passion with lavish production design and first-class cinematography.
‘Kalank’ depicted the hurdles faced by the eternal love that goes beyond the norms and rules of society. The periodic film showed the high morals of society during the 1940s. The story is all about how true love breaks the boundaries of religion, social status, and norms in society. Director Abhishek Varman is receiving a good response from the film critics for the way he narrated the point that if someone’s partner is in love with another person, then what is the point of the marriage at all.
When it comes to the performances, Alia Bhatt excelled in the character of young Roop who is torn between respect for husband Dev and her newfound love for Zafar. Her on-screen chemistry with Varun Dhawan is one of the strongest assets to the movie. Aditya Roy Kapur made his performance stand out with the stoic silences and reserved nature of his character. Varun Dhawan looked super hot with his toned, greased body and has done justice to his intense yet conflicted character.
Madhuri Dixit-Nene presence as a Heera Mandi courtesan stood out in the film while Sonakshi Sinha makes the most of the limited scope the screenplay offers her. Kunal Kemmu played the character of Zafar's friend Abdul which has grey-shades. Sanjay Dutt’s performance is another high point of the film which depicted the problematic equation between father and son, Dev and Balraj.
The film features arresting frames full of grand visuals captured by cinematographer Binod Pradhan, and the music by Pritam has stood out songs like 'Ghar More Pardesiya' and the 'Kalank' title track.
The film is worth viewing with the star-studded cast and their toned performances. But Kalank remains as Perfect Example that High budget, Multi Starcast, Massive Sets, and Wide Release will never ensure success if your film lacks gripping screenplay and soul. On a whole Kalank is a great opportunity wasted.
