Seethakaathi Story

Vijay Sethupathi’s experimental film is an absolute winner

Aiya Adhimoolam (Vijay Sethupathi) is the pioneer in theatre plays. He is a superstar in theatre and one of the most celebrated actors who respects art as he respects his life.

Something tragic happens in his life, which is followed by a good outcome. This good outcome unearths several new actors who are novice when it comes to acting but flourish in cine field. Their fame rises to the peak until they respect the art. The minute they see it as just a business, these actors lose their talent.

What happened to Aiya? What was the good outcome of the tragic outcome? Will the newcomers realise the importance of art?

These are the questions that Balaji Tharaneetharan took on himself and rendered it as an interesting story with Seethakathi.

Seethakaathi Performances

It is safe to say that Vijay Sethupathi is the best thing that has happened to Tamil cinema in the ref by times. In Seethakathi, he has literally lived the role of a theatre artist.

There is a sense of sadness in his face when he comes to know that theatre is dying. His expressions are on point and makes us feel bad for him.

The supporting characters played by Sunil Reddy (as Dhanapal), Raj Kumar (Saravanan), Mouli (Parasuraman) and Bagavathi Perumal (Sundar) are a huge plus to the film.

All these actors have given their career best performance which makes us laugh and feel bad with them.

Yesteryear actress Archana is a perfect fit as Lakshmi, wife of Aiya Adhimoolam. She is a wife who respects her husband’s choice even if he doesn’t bring home money.

Seethakaathi Positives

Director Balaji Tharaneetharan has taken the gutsiest script and has made it enjoyable. Seethakathi is not a high concept film, but a simple fictional story that will evoke all sorts of emotions.

He has attempted a meta film and it just sucks ya intro the script within the first half an hour. The film also tells us the difference between theatre and mainstream cinema and why the latter is being celebrated while theatre is struggling to find a place in art even though they have talented performers with them.

Govind Vasantha’s music is a huge advantage to Seethakathi. If we thought 96 was his best work, he has showcased variety with this film.

Cinematographer TK Saraskanth has given life to Seethakathi with brilliant lighting. He has played with shadows and has conveyed the message through that.

Seethakaathi Negatives

Since Seethakathi is an experimental film by Balaji Tharaneetharan, we do not know whether everyone will be able to buy the concept.

The length of Seethakathi and screen time of Vijay Sethupathi is worrisome. The director could trim few scenes and make the film more taut as it tends to move slow at times.

Seethakaathi Verdict

Seethakathi is a different attempt in Tamil cinemas and deserves people’s attention. Vijay Sethupathi must be appreciated for picking this script as his landmark 25th film. It deserves a watch as it has a lot of emotions packed in it.
