A video has surfaced online showing a group of people cornering police personnel and pelting stones at them in Gujarat's Ahmedabad during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. While the policemen try to shield themselves, some locals stand in front of them to stop the protestors from hurting the officers and rescue them.
In the morning, the police detained more than three dozen persons from Lal Darwaja following minor clash. In the afternoon, a clash erupted with protesters at Sardar Baug area where police resorted to lathi-charge and fired tear gas shells.
The incident had repeated in Mirzapur and Shah-e-Alam where protesters pelted stones at the police team marching through the area. The video footage showed a mob beating cops who were marching through the road.
Protesters beat up policemen and pelted stones at police vans, prompting the police to use their batons and tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. Police said that in the stone-pelting, at least 20 persons got injured including policemen.
Meanwhile, the police detained over 100 people including Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani who had assembled at Nehrunagar to protest, as they had no permission to protest.
